Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a normal cruise and an expedition cruise?
Expedition cruising is all about the destination, whereas on a normal cruise the ship is a destination in itself. Expect smaller ships, less people, and more active shore excursions. Expedition cruises are less likely to have theme park style rides onboard like you'll find on a cruiseline like Royal Caribbean or NCL, instead you'll find a bigger selection of onboard destination experts - like biologists, geologists, cultural ambassadors and professional photographers.
Who is expedition cruising good for?
Active, adventurous, eco-conscious travellers who want to explore a destination in-depth and at a slower pace. They'll love learning, and want to experience local culture and cuisine away from crowds of tourists.
What are the benefits of cruising on a small ship?
The best thing about small expedition-style cruise ships is that they have access to areas the big ships physically or legally just aren't able to go to. In Alaska for example, this means you'll be able to get right up close to the glaciers, visit smaller communities and stop at ports larger ships can't. It gives you a much more in-depth experience of the destination you're visiting.
Additionally, as a smaller ship means fewer passengers, you'll spend less time queuing and have more time for exploring!
Is expedition cruising only in the Arctic or Antarctic?
No! Expedition cruising is one of the fastest growing travel styles right now - especially for New Zealand travellers - and cruise companies are expanding their itinerary options constantly. You can choose to cruise expedition-style almost anywhere in the world, from Australia to the Amazon.
What is a travel broker?
Travel Brokers are much the same as the travel agents you see in shops downtown, except that we tend to run our own businesses from home. I'm supported by New Zealand’s top broker group, The Travel Brokers – a division of Helloworld. They keep me up to date with the latest travel technology and provide excellent administration support so that I can focus on providing you with the best service on the front line.
Do you only book cruises?
No! While I specialise in expedition cruises, I can also sort all other aspects of your travel - including flights, accommodation, sightseeing tours and car or motorhome hire.
Will I have to pay in full up front?
It depends what you're booking and when you're travelling.
Flights generally have to be paid for within 1-7 days of booking.
Other travel arrangements (cruises, tours, accommodation, etc) can often be held until up to 6 weeks prior to travel before payment is due, but may require a small deposit at the time of booking.
Can I buy travel insurance through you if I've booked my own flights?
Absolutely! Just email me (or use the contact form) with your flight details together with name and date of birth and I'll send you a quote.
